Biotope Information

This biotope was designed to replicate the Pasir Panjang lakeshore area near Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan, which hosts many endemic species. The water in this region is highly acidic and soft, with a dark blackwater coloration. In flowing areas, disturbed peat moss particles cause the water to appear cloudy. However, the shoreline section I recreated represents a calmer, low-flow zone where species preferring tranquil conditions are typically found. Species such as Sphaerichthys osphromenoides (Chocolate Gourami) and Parosphromenus spp. inhabit the shaded areas and cavities formed by roots and aquatic vegetation to avoid strong currents. Meanwhile, fish like Sundadanio axelrodi, Brevibora dorsiocellata, Trigonopoma pauciperforatum, and Desmopuntius Rhomboocellatus (Snakeskin Barb) are more adapted to swimming against the current but occasionally visit the shore to rest and graze on biofilm and algae. The biotope was inspired by underwater footage from the following videos: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID7Clj7__bc&t=1237s - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvGe8V5K_Sw I also contacted the botanist scientist who filmed these videos to gather accurate information about the plant composition, local fauna, and water parameters of the region. Judges' Comments

In a notable achievement, this biotope aquarium demonstrates a highly precise and coherent technical execution in recreating the acidic blackwaters of Pasir Panjang lakeshore area near Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan. The fauna selection is appropriate and reflects a deep understanding, with only a subtle taxonomic precision elevating its rigor: it would have been strengthened by considering other Sphaerichthys species (such as S. vaillanti) for maximum geographical fidelity. While the flora offers an opportunity for refinement, with the Cryptocoryne foundation being a key strength, substituting more common species (like Murdannia Keisak and Juncus Effusus) with more specialized native peat swamp vegetation could ensure a perfect biological representation. The final result is a captivating, vibrant, and faithful ecosystem that deserves high recognition for its dedication and level of detail. ¡Congrats!

Here is a creator not afraid of detritus, and the display looks all the better for it! The author has clearly done their research and used it to create an authentic display, suitable for the chosen fishes. For me, where it loses points is the simple flat background, which makes the display look a bit two-dimensional. Perhaps the use of a coloured-foil or other method to give the background a natural hue would have been helpful. As has been mentioned a number of time with other entries, the final photo could be of better quality, to make it easier for the judges to assess and interpret the condition and features of the display and inhabitants. Aside from this, I think it's a great display! I'm especially pleased to see Chocolate Gouramis kept in a larger group, which is good for their social interactions and looks authentic. Finally, the way the Gouramis blend into the environment is testament to the author's ability to use hardscape and botanicals to faithfully reproduce their habitat.
