About This Aquascape

“It’s Miller Time” has nothing to do with adult beverages. It is named tongue in cheek in homage to Mike Miller who inspired me to try my hand at Dutch Aquascaping. Before jumping in feet first over my head I decided to try my hand in an existing tank. A 29 gallon tank to prove to myself I had a shot at pulling off the concept. I have bought a 75 gallon as I gained confidence from this attempt and hope to have a better submission next year.

Nice, bright aquarium. What's striking is that the view to the back wall clearly divides the aquarium into two parts. Potamogeton lucens is a somewhat cluttered plant and blends somewhat with the Vallisneria americana on the other side, which reinforces the cluttered effect. Furthermore, this plant somewhat disruptively obstructs the view of the Limnophila aquatica behind it. In my opinion, the Limnophila aquatica is also a bit yellowish, and also small. The Lobelia street should actually run from wide at the front to narrower at the back to enhance the sense of depth. Regarding the fish stock: The groups are on the small side. Hemigrammus erythrozonus is very similar to Paracheirodon innesi and could therefore be omitted, while a fish is missing at the surface. The aquarium does appear healthy. A record of fish numbers is missing.

This has a lot of ingredients of a good Dutch tank. Its pretty but atm its somewhat of a mess. All the greens on the left side blend in together. It would benefit from more meticulous trimming, a strong focal point in the correct 1/3 position, and if the street wasnt dead center. Also with that much exposed back wall there really needs to be something covering it It wouldnt take much to make this a really good Dutch. Just keep at it, keep studying other Dutch tanks and come back next year!

Shows some potential. Tank is underplanted in the center and overgrown on the ends.
