Rawa Pening Lake is a natural lake that has stood as a silent witness since the time of Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia. An old railway track, a remnant of that era, stretches across the lake and adds historical value, making Rawa Pening a popular educational tourism destination for visitors from across the country.

It is sufficient to change 20% of the aquarium’s total water volume once a week.
Indonesia, Central Java, Ambarawa, Sumurup This biotope recreates the ecosystem of Rawa Pening Lake, featuring a sand-based substrate that reflects the natural texture of the environment. Within this habitat, both flora and fauna thrive. The primary plant species is umbrella grass (Cyperus alternifolius), characterized by its long stems and dangling roots. The fauna includes freshwater needlefish (Dermogenys pusilla), tinheads (Aplocheilus panchax), swamp bettas (Trichopsis vittata), and humpback shrimp. The roots of the umbrella grass provide essential shelter for small fish, protecting them from natural predators. This plant typically grows in moist, slightly waterlogged soils, making it well suited to this biotope.

This display feels richly organic and is clearly an excellent home for the fishes who appear to be in good health. The author has put the display together very well so that it does not feel contrived. The only reason for not getting a top score is that the plain background feels quite flat, making it clear the biotope is 'within an aquarium'. Additionally, the quality of the photography could be better (for example sharper) and this is an issue with a number of entries this year. The quality of photographs is less important for the visual appeal and more so that judges can accurately perceive the health and condition of fishes and clearly interpret the quality of the layout.
